Printmakers Council Award 2020

I embrace multi-disciplinary practices and artefacts from my background to work around the themes of culture, identity and memory. My project called Post-Memory, based on  my grandfather’s memories after the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939),  has the purpose of creating a collective memorial for everyone who was part of that historical event in any way. Botanical elements form the link to bring the work together with the place where I came from and to represent struggle as the essence of life.

Post-Memory: 1 leaf = 1 person = 1 generation is an artist book which commemorates every person who died for Covid-19 as they are the same generation who fought in the war and who went on to build up my country afterwards. A post-war testimony declared:

No olvidar. No debemos dejar la historia en el olvido. Olvidar es enterrar definitivamente a quienes tanto dieron y tanto sufrieron. No olvidar, para recordar siempre.

Do not forget. We must not forget history. Forgetting is burying forever those who gave so much and suffered so much for our country. Do not forget, to always remember.

I cannot forget. Can you?

  1. Fascinating to see the text of a soldier’s poems made concrete in these wood blocks – the colour of the wood leaches into the prints as surely as the time passing erodes the memories of the survivors and their descendants. Truly evocative.
