Skin IV
Graphite on paper

I am interested in the body, in skin; our permanent dress and the boundary between the self and others; the inside and the outside.

This recent work explores the idea of the skin as a surface to be modified or transformed, considering issues surrounding women’s perception of their own appearance, and how they measure up to the shifting beauty standards prevalent in social media and reality TV. The idea that cosmetic surgery is quickly becoming an acceptable way to overcome a negative body image moved me to focus on surgical tools. Through drawing and print I wanted to contemplate the imperfection of skin considering both fragility and strength, beauty and the abject.
